Thesis competition

The Finnish Technical Communications Society organises an annual competition for theses in the field of technical communications. The competition was initially organised in 2003. Contestants do not have to be members of the society.

The contestants are expected to display their work in the poster exhibition organised in connection with the society’s autumn seminar. The winner will receive a grant, which in 2004 is 500 euros.

The rules of the thesis competition

The Finnish Technical Communications Society organises an annual competition for technical communications theses. The aim of the competition is to familiarise the members of the society and its interest groups with research in the field and to motivate students to address technical communication issues in their theses. All theses addressing technical communications (M.A. theses, theses required for a diploma, and polytechnic theses) that have been accepted in the seminar year between 1 January - 30 June or the year preceding the seminar between 1 July - 31 December may participate in the competition.

The theses are evaluated by an expert committee consisting of academics and professionals in the field of technical communication. The committee is appointed by the board of the Finnish Technical Communications Society. The decision of the committee is final. The board of the society sets the deadlines and awards for the competition annually.

The grounds for the evaluation include the clarity of the thesis, familiarity with technical communication, the innovativeness and practical applications of the work and its results, and clear language and presentation. Only the evaluation of the winning thesis is published.

If there are fewer than five theses participating in the competition, it may be postponed to the following year. If this should happen, the contestants of the previous year participate in the competition automatically.
