TCeurope

TCeurope (Technical Communication in Europe) is a European umbrella organisation for technical communications societies whose objective is to support the independent national societies. The organisation also cooperates with the European Union in issues regarding the standardisation of technical communications and safety guidelines for consumer product documentation. The organisation also aims to make technical communications better known, especially in southern Europe.

TCeurope was founded in 2001 after the national technical communications societies of Germany and Great Britain suggested that a common European umbrella organisation for technical communicators should be established in order to promote training, acquisition of funds, standardisation and consumer protection. FTCS was one of the founding members, and the organisation also has the technical communications societies of the Netherlands, France and Switzerland as members. TCeurope is registered in Brussels, where the office of the organisation is located. The organisation finances its operations through membership fees from national societies, project funding from the EU and sponsorships.

Objectives and activities

The activities visible to all are the organisation’s website, newsletters, EU projects and annual Colloquium, which enables discussions and networking among professionals from different countries. The organisation currently has two research and networking projects under way that are supported by the EU: TecDoc-Net and SecureDoc.

The objectives of TCeurope are to represent its members at the European level, to improve the quality of technical documentation and the exchange of information between professionals, to promote standardisation and training in the field, to develop the European market for jobs in technical communication and to promote and support technical communications societies in new European countries. To reach these goals, TCeurope lobbies actively in the European Union, organises meetings for its members and maintains several different working groups for training, consumer protection and standardisation.

FTCS in TCeurope

The Finnish Technical Communications Society has been a part of TCeurope since the organisation’s beginning. Tarja Tolvanen is our representative in the organisation; she is currently also the treasurer of TCeurope.
